Podcast Feature: Wargaming Discussion
Kevin and his colleague Kathleen O'Brien were recently interviewed by Lex Luciak, Head of the Canadian Chapter of Fight Club International.
Â
Over the course of half an hour, Kevin and Kathleen discussed how to create a Decision Forcing Case, how to engage students, and how to train leaders to act when there is no easy right answer.
Georgetown University Wargaming Society
On April 18th, Kevin engaged the Georgetown University Wargaming Society with a ninety minute presentation. He talked about the role of the Decision Forcing Case in wargaming, how it can be used to forge leaders, and walked participants through one of his DFCs from the perspective of Miami chieftain Little Turtle.
Â
Kevin also challenged participants to create their own DFCs, picking battles, choosing leaders, and what details were essential in understanding command leadership under duress.
"What made Kevin Johnston's decision forcing cases stand out wasn't just the quality of the scenarios. It was that he actually taught us how to build them ourselves. That's not something most instructors bother with. Kevin walked GUWS participants through the whole process, and by the end you didn't just understand how these cases worked, you felt confident creating your own. That kind of teaching sticks with you."
Sofia Valle, President of the Georgetown University Wargaming Society
"My conversation with Kevin Johnston and Kathleen O’Brien offered a fascinating and in-depth exploration of Decision Forcing Cases, giving my audience a clear, practical understanding of how these scenarios work in real-world contexts. Their insights brought the methodology to life, demonstrating how Decision Forcing Cases not only enhance critical thinking, but also serve as a powerful and engaging tool for wargaming, leadership development, and more effective decision-making under pressure."
